Starting on Monday, October 5th, the Kickapoo District will transition to virtual instruction for students in grades 6-12. At the elementary school we will be cohorting the 5th grade, and 4K. At this time it is felt that the other elementary classes can continue without cohort scheduling. This weeks Covid Case count numbers in both counties continue to climb. We are inching closer to the metrics that would require the whole district to go virtual. We will stay in communication with both counties and take into consideration any planned large testing events and their results while making decisions next week. Parents in 4K and 5th grades will be notified tomorrow how the scheduling for their children will work. Thank you for your flexibility and patience, our goal is to monitor the prevalence of Covid in our communities while prioritizing the health and safety of students and staff, this results in changing models of instruction. Mr Mithum will post the details on how virtual instruction will be designed for grades 6-12 tomorrow. Both of our counties surpassed the 30 cases per 10,000 residents which was our next gating metric in our plan. Please see the updated tracker on our website for more information and the trends over the last four weeks.
Thank you,
Mr. Olsen

As we conclude our 6th week of school I wanted to provide parents with some perspective on COVID in our community. Both Richland and Vernon Counties are trending in the wrong direction. Bi-weekly case counts per 10,000 residents are trending in the wrong direction and have almost doubled in the last few weeks. School districts across the state are transitioning to virtual learning models on a daily basis. Many districts have created their own metrics or have partnered with local health departments to create them. No one wants to close schools to in-person instruction. When we made the decision to start school early it was based on an assumption that the virus would spread more rapidly as Autumn wore on. This educated guess on our part has proved to be true. Please review the metric that is located on our website, we try to update it every Thursday after school once we have the data from the counties that is necessary to post the information. Vernon County is reporting that over 6% of patients being tested are positive, this ration has also nearly tripled in the last few weeks. The prevalence of COVID in our community is rising, please follow face covering and distancing guidelines as applicable and try to avoid large gatherings.
Have a great weekend!
Mr. Olsen
